Consider
We admire great sports people when they achieve their aims, and we extol the talents of our great artists and musicians. What they do is set their sights on a goal and use their innate talents, resources and discipline to achieve. They have a passion which drives them. You can see the lights in their eyes. Their goals are not dulled by fear, powerlessness and inertia. For every one who achieves greatness there are thousands who are having a go and setting their own goals for success. Satisfaction does not come alone from public acclaim.
If you sit down and talk to AUSBUY members running businesses, the lights are on in their eyes because they are living an idea; they are working with others to develop a shared vision. Like the sportspeople and artists, one of the attributes they share is a realisation of a dream. Their success is shared as they create jobs and wealth for their people and this country.
Every big business started with someone having an idea to solve a problem, to satisfy a need and a vision which translated into action. They display courage, endurance, make sacrifices and work with others to achieve. They are "the builders and makers" which is the foundation of Australia.
AUSBUY's Corporate Members represent a diverse range of products and services, across a wide range of sizes from small one person operations to major organisations supplying Australians and export markets. These businesses interface with us at every level of our lives.
The stories in these Member profiles are about what drives people to create, to build and to sustain an idea and how we all benefit. It is the essence of what gives these good Australian companies their integrity to deliver innovative, high quality, good value products and services. These stories are the provenance of our AUSBUY members which makes them unique.
We invite you to read these profiles and imagine how one small idea can be developed to produce something which makes a difference in many lives.

Aussie School Books Pty Ltd
Gary Underwood combined his experience as a teacher, writer and working with Australian educational publishers before building a business called Aussie School Books.

The preservation of a culture is through story telling. Ready access to the web site and mass media has meant we have lost sight of our unique Australian stories as told in our own language and from the perspective our own core values.

Caldent
Caldent was the brain child of Frank Powell who started his career as a dental technician in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane in 1942.
He finally established his own business and for many years took pride in making dentures that helped people look fabulous with his gift for making perfect fitting dentures but he was always searching for ways to brighten their smiles when customers had stained dentures. They continually complained to him that they were not satisfied with the denture cleansers on the market.
For quite a few years he experimented with dentures to develop the right cleanser combining just the right amount of product and the finest ingredients together that work properly on stained dentures. The product works better in powder form, so it is produced in sachets. The end result was Caldent Denture Cleanser; a once a week denture stain remover.
It took a long time to establish Caldent in the market place. That was more than 25 years ago and now the family still run and own the business in Brisbane. The family remain committed to continuing his dream of producing and selling the best denture cleanser on the market and to keep it Australian owned for not only his family but for Australia.

Eco Living Centre and Eco Lighting Centre
Eco Living Centre (incorporating Eco Lighting Centre) was established in 2000 by Alistair Duncan after many years interest in sustainable technologies.
Alistair says "while there is much discussion about Climate Change, the reality is we have failed in invest in energy and water infrastructure over many decades so costs will increase for businesses and homes. The technologies are available to reduce the demand on the environment. All we need is the will to implement them.
"Because Eco Living Centre deals in a wide range of technologies we take an wholistic approach, and offer the right product or service for the situation. Wherever possible we source products from Australian companies, many of our lighting ranges are exclusive, we train and employ local trades people how to install these new technologies. Among our ranges we provide hot water, solar power, tanks, composting systems, monitors, energy audits, low energy lights etc".
Eco Lighting Centre's professional lighting designers service architects, builders, local government, landscape architects, and home owners for commercial, industrial or domestic situations inside or out.
Testimonial: "We took Eco Lighting Centre's advice and had them install low energy lights in our home unit garages. Our monthly bill has already reduced from $5,000 to $2,000, and we still have outside lights to change. Our residents already feel richer and safer. We only wish our body Corporate had taken the decision to get Alistair's advice earlier".
Emergency ID Australia
Nicole Graham is the founder of Emergency ID Australia. When Nicole was a Police Officer, she experienced many serious incidents where emergency ID information would have been beneficial to both the wearer and to Medical and Emergency Personnel. Also, several years ago whilst Nicole was just 34 and apparently fit and healthy with two small children, she discovered she had a serious heart condition which could have caused her to have a massive heart attack at any time. She has since had open heart surgery to successfully correct her condition. This again reinforced her knowledge that medical ID jewellery could be vital to treatment and to contacting loved ones, so you aren’t left alone when you need someone the most.
After leaving the Police Force, Nicole established Emergency ID Australia. Consultation with her contacts in other Emergency Services refined the products and systems in place. As a result, Emergency ID Australia now carries a huge range of Medical alert ID bracelets, medical ID necklaces, children’s Emergency ID, Emergency ID wallet cards and much more! Emergency ID Australia are the LEADERS in Medical Jewellery and have Australia’s largest range.
With an aging population, the number of people in Australia diagnosed with dementia is projected to increase dramatically, from 245,400 in 2009 to 1.13 million cases by 2050. It has been estimated that over 900,000 Australians currently have diabetes, and about half of those are not aware that they have the condition. Goldie Manufacturing Pty Ltd
Goldie Manufacturing, known in the trade as Goldie, has been making cushion inserts and pillows for over 23 years. In March 2005, Elizabeth and Stewart Inglis took over the company. They combine their business experience with interest in sewing, craft and design. Goldie’s product range is wide and certainly not limited to pillows and cushion inserts, and they have managed to grow their business in the face of cheap imports.
As Australians enjoy outdoor living with style, Goldies Papasan Cushions are much in demand. These are cushions with buttons and usually round to fit into a chair. They add a touch of style for discerning buyers. Upholsterers use Goldie’s cushions for custom work as these can be difficult to make.
Goldie’s success is due to their flexibility and creativity. They can make any shape or size required, for example, square, round, oblong, bolsters, walled cushions, boomerangs and hearts.
They use pure virgin polyester in their cushions, as they cannot guarantee the consistency, quality or integrity of recycled fibre that most of their foreign and some local competitors use. Customers are served throughout Australia as well as Christmas Island and New Zealand.
Go Natural Australia
Kate and David Worth have a passion for natural quality food, especially organic foods which enhance wellbeing and enjoyment. As a family they choose to lead an organic wholefood lifestyle. This philosophy translated into them starting Go Natural over 20 years ago. They now have over 60 products which are sold all over Australia and exported to over 20 countries.
Their philosophy is about providing the opportunity for everyone to enjoy REAL food (whole food) products, with REAL food value, that tastes great for everyone’s pleasure and wellbeing. Based on fruits and nuts the range comprises both sweet and savoury flavours that are convenient to eat and ideal for a quick snacks, packed for outdoor adventures or lunches.
The integrity of their product includes taking very real steps to lessen the impact they have as manufacturers and marketers upon the environment.
- Actively avoids the use of GE products
- Actively avoids derivatives of GE products including oils
- Actively avoid products fed on GE stock feed.
Other initiatives they have undertaken are:
- Fuel Efficient Vehicles/Biofuels - All new vehicles for their sales staff are now diesel. This gives them greater fuel economy and the option of using Biofuels such as Biodiesel.
- Food Miles - Buying key ingredients from Australian producers close to their manufacturing plant reduces the food miles of our products.
- Office Efficiencies - To save paper their office policy is ‘print only when you need to.’ All of their office printers are set to print both sides.
These might seem like simple things to do, but this attention detail and adherence to producing products in balance with the planet are also in balance with the people who enjoy Go Natural products.

Oz Records
Oz Records has been the life long inspiration of Martin Erdman who can claim many firsts in his long career as a record producer and a man who has an ear for talent. Martin is in the history books as producing the first Australian recording to achieve sales of over one million copies in the USA with the 1973 single by Adelaide's Sister Janet Mead singing the rock version of 'The Lord's Prayer'. He also recorded Peter Allen's original version of 'I Still Call Australia Home’ in 1980. Both recordings gained international acclaim.
Martin’s passion to support Australian talent has presented opportunities for Australians to tell our stories in song. Jimmy Little, Rolf Harris and John Waters are just three of a long list of favourites.
From the age of eleven, Martin showed a natural interest in sound technology and a love of music. His career path has never wavered as he combines high technical skills with creative sensitivity to the words and music. Now at the ripe young age of 73 he is still recording Australian talent and selling recordings all over the world on-line.

Samios Plumbing Supplies Pty Ltd
As a privately owned, Australian company, Samios Plumbing Supplies has one major goal – to support the plumbing industry by way of providing exceptional service, quality products through outlets which employ well-trained and motivated staff.
Since 1947 we have helped our customers achieve success in a diversity of fields. Samios first opened its doors in 1947, when a father and son team began trading in Woolloongabba, QLD, as a plumbing, hardware and earthmoving business.
In 2004, Brian and Greta Webb purchased the plumbing side of the business, which was a perfect extension to the existing owned company, CNW Electrical Supplies.
Both businesses are Australian owned and operated and are able to work in partnership for the benefit of their customers. The plumbing and electrical trades are very similar and often work together. With this vision, Brian and Greta were able to bring together the perfect match.
Superior service is the key to Samios’ success. This approach has seen very positive outcomes and will propel Samios into a new phase over the next years, with new branches opening in all Australian states.
Our structure allows us to service each of our clients, regardless of size and need. We develop our relationship in a way that allows us to be more than just a supplier, but rather a partner to our customers’s business, working together to achieve the same goals.

Seasol International Pty Ltd
Seasol International Pty Ltd - a home-grown family company.
In 1968, Redic Pty. Ltd., a small company with just two employees, was founded in Australia by Eric Haynes.
Rapid success enabled a number of acquisitions. One of the companies acquired, in 1983, was Tasbond - a Tasmanian company that had been manufacturing Seasol since the 1970’s. Tasbond was particularly of interest to Eric Haynes as the species of kelp and the manufacturing process used to make Seasol were unique.
After the stock market crash in 1987, Redic was re-privatised. The company divested itself of a number of its divisions but the Seasol division was retained.
In 1997 the new Seasol home garden range was launched and supported with a major advertising and promotional campaign. The distribution network had been completely overhauled and the product was finally made widely available to the public nationwide, via DIY/hardware stores, mass merchants, garden centres and supermarkets.
Seasol’s sales and popularity amongst home gardeners grew rapidly and it soon became by far the top selling liquid garden treatment in Australia. PowerFeed was introduced in 2000.
In 2003 the Seasol division became a separate company - Seasol International Pty. Ltd. The company now employs over 60 people and is still owned by Eric Haynes.

Simply Junket Pty Ltd
Simply Junket started 4 years ago with 6 Australian ladies forming a partnership to bring Junket back to the public eye, and prevent it disappearing for good. Each partner played a different roll, dependant on their skills.
Votes were taken on the format, name and colour scheme for the re-born Junket.
Two of the partners, Julie and Lee, had no other employment at that time and between them worked the business 5 days a week. The remaining partners gradually found working 2 jobs too demanding and resigned.
Julie, who worked as a junket tablet maker for 21 years before helping to create Simply Junket, has the required junket making skills, and is the manufacturing partner in control of all production, home economist duties, packing requirements and quality control.
Lee, who worked in Administration and Finance for the same company as Julie for 21 years, is the financial and accounting partner, also doing IT, sales and dispatch.
Junket powder has a variety of uses not just a dessert. It is made with a non-animal enzyme that sets milk and therefore of benefit to home cheese makers. Junket also settles upset stomachs and is a great aid for travel sickness.

Tasmanian Clothing Company
Nearly three decades ago Graeme Davis saw a business opportunity to arrest the decline of the clothing industry in Australia from his corner of the world in northern Tasmania. He and his wife started the Tasmanian Clothing Company to make and supply quality Australian sourced and made clothing. The cold winters in Tasmania certainly spurred on their focus on fleece and knitted ranges for schools and sports teams. But their business also includes clothing for corporations or wherever uniforms or casual wear are required. Their ranges are also ideal for outdoors in Tasmania’s pristine environment or anywhere else in Australia.
Graeme’s team includes in-house designers who create designs for clients’ specific needs, as well as his skilled employees who make the garments with attention and care. Integrity, ingenuity and imagination make Tasmanian Clothing Company very competitive in a. unfair trading environment. He understands that service and good supplier partnerships are important so that he can best service his customers.
Total Supply Solutions
In 1978 at the age of 26, Gordon Blamire sold his first drum of floor cleaning detergent and little did he know that his decision to join the world of cleaning chemicals and toilet products would result in the creation of Australia's leading supplier of cleaning and washroom solutions, Total Supply Solutions.
In 1996, Gordon joined with his eldest son Chris, who was 21 at the time, to develop the family enterprise. Although very young, Chris had already done plenty in business including working as a supplier and consultant to Big Kev for a national TV campaign when he was 19, so he was well equipped to assist Gordon build the family business.
Gordon's youngest son David joined the business in 2001. David was 20 years old and had just spent 2 years at sea in the merchant navy and assisting with a non-profit organisation's overseas work. Now David's son Eli (3) is often heard telling his mum that he wants to help Daddy sell toilet paper and chemicals because people need them.
Today, Chris and David are joint Managing Directors and widely known as the young guns of the cleaning supply industry. They are uniquely enthusiastic about the future and passionate about supporting Australian owned companies producing fantastic Australian made products.

With their hands on approach, Theo and Pauline carefully craft every Vacation Camper from scratch, which gives them flexibility to be innovative and creative.

Western Tourist Radio
Barry Green, owner of Western Tourist Radio, recognised the potential of the internet as a powerful tool to promote small tourism businesses. Barry and wife Dale also own Boronia Farm www.boroniafarm.com.au at Donnybrook in the South West of WA.
After facing many challenges in operating the Tourist Radio service and great frustration that government backed tourism websites charged as much to list their one cottage as they charge multinational hotels (the logic of government user pays policy) Barry realised that the internet allowed small businesses to support each other by including links between each others sites. This has been very significant with participants in www.farmstaywest.com.au, www.petfriendlywa.com.au and www.bandbwa.net.com.au now receiving significant website traffic for a fraction the cost of participation in government operated tourism websites.
Numerically, the majority of tourism businesses in WA are owner operated businesses. The website www.noleavenolifewa.com.au aims to help both West Australians and visitors find the small tourism businesses as well as bigger operators by including links direct to supporter websites as well as to local Visitor Centre websites.
The radio programs, some of which can be heard on line from www.touristradio.com.au tell the stories of the natural and commercial attractions of each region and feature interviews with local characters, the people who have created the history and current attractions of each area.
Wildcraft Dispensary
Wildcraft Dispensary began business in 2006 as two busy natural health practitioners who were finding it increasingly difficult to source what they needed for their patients. There were no true certified organic teas of this nature on the market. Everything was coming from overseas, based on poor grade raw material and full of additives. We used our expertise to create a high standard product of excellent quality.
Our customers appreciate our energy and our passion. We developed a strong customer base which is growing steadily. As a manufacturer we support other Australian businesses by purchasing all our supplies and raw materials in Australia.
We are currently investigating Australian Native herbs and the next 12 months will launch a set of Unique Bush Teas which we are very excited about.
