An Economy Driven By Debt

October 23rd, 2007

The monthly credit card repayments by Australians now exceed $18 billion and the total debt on their cards exceeds $40 billion as they rush out to buy the latest toys. We criticise politicians for many things but, this is a problem for which Australians carry personal responsibility. In the present era of full employment, people can and should be able to budget for regular repayments. However, we must take into account the fact that many people have substantial mortgages. Some of these mortgages were only made possible by the relaxation of credit standards by financial institutions. The availability of money, and a shortage of new homes being built, has resulted in the bidding up of house prices.

Coca Cola Amatil Bid For Golden Circle Falls Over

October 18th, 2007

For whatever reason, this bid is no longer on the table and the ACCC no longer has to make a decision. Once again we would stress that we are not against Coca Cola Amatil, but are against the creation of monopoly power.

The ACCC Gets It Right - For A Change

October 18th, 2007

Woolworths have been told that they cannot buy K-Mart if Westfarmers want to split up the Coles Group, as this, combined with Woolworths dominance in the supermarket area and their ownership of Big W, would create an anti-competitive situation. They would, however, be allowed to buy Officeworks – a market where they have little current presence.

Banking And Australia

October 16th, 2007

There is no doubt that we have one of the most profitable banking sectors in the world, but is it the most efficient? When Paul Keating gave the banks freedom on setting charges, in return for reducing credit card interest rates, he obviously didn’t know what he was doing. Initially, the move was revenue neutral, but as the banks developed their creative talents and devised new areas for charging fees, their profits took off. One would like to think that the profit increases were reward for increased efficiency and service, but the facts would not support this. The ability of our banks to raise fees has been the driving force. This is a product of the near monoply situation enjoyed by our “big four” banks. Moving your business from one bank to another is not a simple arrangement as there are overdraft arrangements, credit cards, mortgages and monthly standing charges to be considered. The thought of reorganising these is a disincentive, particularly when the alternative offers a very similar deal.

Ausbuy’s “Buy Australian” Television Advertising Campaign

October 11th, 2007

Ausbuy has been working with Only Australian Groceries to promote the Ausbuy Guide and the importance of supporting Australian companies through the purchase of Australian products.

To do this we have invested in television advertising, initially only in South East Queensland, although, if this is successful we hope to broadcast the advertisement nationally.
